Compendium of Curiosities - Challenge No. 20 - 'Industrial Grunge'

Another great challenge from Linda this week, over at her blog Studio L3.
The technique is the very manly titled 'Industrial Grunge' and is detailed on page 54 of Tim Holtz' book 'Compendium of Curiosities'.

I used one of Tim Holtz' Alterations Sizzix dies called 'Styled Labels' and coloured it with Copper alcohol ink, Walnut Stain distress ink, gold pen and some metallic rub on paste.

Having created a suitably industrial grungy piece I didn't know what to do with it - lol!  Eventually I attached it with two gold coloured brads to the end of a document box I have.  I stuck on some lovely vintage ruler paper first - from Tim Holtz 'Lost and Found' idea-ology range.

I wasn't sure what to do with the keyhole, but left it as it was - if I'd put black paper underneath it, it wouldn't have shown up - right?  What would you have done - I'd love to hear?

If you'd like to see other examples of this technique, they're all linked on Linda's blog.  If you do pop over there, you'll also see details of the wonderful prizes she's giving away to one random winner also.

Thanks for looking, and Gini if you stop by, I'd love to know your interpretation of 'Industrial Grunge' !  Last week's technique was 'Extreme Masking' and Gini said "So is this something that a particularly daring Highwayman also does?" LOL

Hi ho Silver, away ...........!!

It works realy well, the paper is just right to show of the keyhole, which is fantastic.

Sherry, this is beautiful, and an absolutely perfect way to use the Industrial Grunge technique! That has got to be the coolest document box I've ever seen!

I love that you used the technique to enhance an everyday object. I''m going to borrow idea this for my own storage boxes. :-)

Wonderfully grungy, Sherry. I think I *would* have put black behind the keyhole (maybe direct to paper with black soot distress to give it some depth. But it looks fab as it is.

This is incredible, Sherry. I think I agree with Deb on the black, but it's still wonderful.

Fabulous industrial grunge. Looking at the key hole I might have been tempted to put, well, a face or eye or something like this behind it to pretend somebody or something is peeping through the key hole (lol)

... I think I forgot to mention that it looks already brilliant without anything behind the hole and totally real!

Eeeep now you've put me on the spot!
I shall put the kettle on and have a think...I've even slept on this one and have come up with nothing, sorry Sherry! Never work with children, animals or wild wimen from Shropshire!
You've come up with a wonderful way to use your splendid keyhole and that ruler paper is divine, you were very brave to cut it up. I find I just can't cut into some of my favourites, which is a bit pathetic but true!

An eyeball behind the keyhole peering back at you? Although that idea is not in keeping theme wise with the box which is really too sophisticated for such silliness.
Or would a googly eye work on a black background? (Sorry that's probably a hideous idea, well it IS a hideous idea, but I just love googly eyes.)
A black background that is slightly shaded lighter on one side? Although the way the light falls naturally in the room will create it's own shadow on the black, well probably it will won't it?
Can you see why it takes me so long to make anything!
All the blether aside,
aha, just a minute!
"Industrial grunge is the new black."
Because really, women's magazines seem to be full of this sort of thing...

Great idea to update items around your house, especially using such a beautifully-done keyhole!

For the keyhole "eye" ... maybe you could slide in a label showing whatever is inside of the box?

For instance, "Photos," "Inks," or "Junk."

... that's what ALL of my boxes could say ... "junk!"

:)
